PSA: Uninstall Quicktime For Windows

Unless you use websites or programs that make use of Quicktime then it is highly recommended that if you’re running Windows and have Quicktime installed, you should uninstall it immediately.  The reason is that Apple has publicly stated that it is done with Quicktime for Windows, and is no longer updating or patching it.

Trend Micro has reported that there are two vulnerabilities in the latest version of the software.  These holes aren’t be used by any security threats….yet.  But it’s only a matter of time.  The holes are public and it won’t take very long for some hackers to figure out an exploit.

These two holes will never be patched by Apple.  They’re done.  Through.  There are better ways to do video out there anyway.

It only takes a few seconds to uninstall the software.  If you find you really need it you can download it again later on.  However if you have it on your system the only way to protect against these two zero-day vulnerabilities is to remove the software entirely.  It will never be patched, and the longer the holes are out there the more hackers will take advantage.  And it will be taken advantage of, you can count on that.

If you’re unsure how to uninstall Quicktime, simply go to “Add / Remove Programs” in the Windows settings panel and scroll down to find Quicktime.  Uninstall it from there.  There is more information on Apple’s website here.
